It’s a new world for museums: a new fundraising climate and a world of new technologies that affect how we communicate, build relationships and manage data. This year’s workshop is designed to bring colleagues together and promote a multi-disciplinary approach to these challenges. Instead of separating into concurrent sessions, we’ll stay together as a group to learn from one another. An unparalleled networking opportunity wraps up a day of skill-building and cutting-edge ideas.

9:30 am  Welcome and Introductions

9:45 am  Creating Value in Public Relations

Leah Lamson, Managing Editor, Worcester Telegram Gazette
Experts say that the biggest thing you can do to make your PR efforts pay off is to create value for the media. Show them how they’ll benefit by running your news. Members of the press from a regional and a local newspaper will share useful tools and exercises to help you reinforce your mission and brand for the press and “sell” your museum to this important audience.

11:00 am  Newest E-marketing Tools
Steve Keohane, Director of Development, The Children's Museum of Easton, MA; Paula Peters, Director of Marketing, Plimoth Plantation, MA; and Michael Madura, PAG Co-Chair
From kids to connoisseurs, more people are using websites such as Facebook and Linked-In to socialize and share information. Learn how to design your communications, including newsletters, to make the most of the benefits that both printed formats and the newest e-tools have to offer.

12:00 pm  Membership Database Systems, Part 1 – Buy and Use Wisely
Steve Keohane, Director of Development, The Children's Museum of Easton, MA and John Marshall, eTapestry, Arts and Humanities Account Executive
Learn how to gauge your current and future needs, then balance functionality with cost. Receive tips for negotiating with vendors and training your staff. Various models for administering your database, including the pros and cons of dedicated administration, will also be discussed.

12:30 pm  Lunch and Tour of Exhibits

1:30 pm  Membership Database Systems, Part 2 – Popular Programs

Mike Madura, PAG Co-chair and a certified Raiser’s Edge trainer
Take this opportunity to explore your range of options. The discussion will cover trusted programs such as Raisers Edge, Gift Maker and Donor Perfect, as well as the new, highly secure and economical web-based EAPs, such as E-Tapestry and Reg Online.

2:00 pm  Sponsorships as Key Development Tools
Geoffrey Giglierano, Director of Development and Marketing, Mashantucket Pequot Museum
To paraphrase Mark Twain, “Reports of the death of sponsorships are greatly exaggerated!” Receive practical tools for making the most of sponsorships. Learn how to identify a “good fit,” write compelling ask letters, and understand what sponsors can expect and where your museum should draw the line. Receive advice on contracts and getting your board involved.

3:00 pm  Speed Networking Round Tables
Bring plenty of business cards for this fun networking event. Begin by meeting peers who share your area of interest. Learn about their organizations and what they do. Then, “ding!” Move to another table where you’ll exchange information with colleagues from another area of the PAG—you never know when you might need to call on someone with a different area of expertise, and this is your chance to make those contacts!

3:45 pm  Wrap Up
