Would you believe the museum industry is on the verge of becoming a female-dominated profession? How do you think this will affect the status of women in the field? Counter-intuitively, research in other female-dominated professions has shown that there is often a social stigma associated with the work and that the gender pay gap is significant. What can we learn from the experiences of other female-dominated professions, and how do we work towards gender equity in the museum field? What policies and practices, such as parental leave and hiring procedures, could be included in the discussion around gender equity?

The Gender Equity in Museums Movement (GEMM) is a coalition of individuals and organizations committed to raising awareness about gender inequity in the museum workplace and offering resources for change. The website ( has information to share and tools for combating gender inequity in the field.

All this and more will be discussed. Pack a lunch and bring questions for an engaging discussion on gender equity in the museum field. All are welcome.
