As Maine’s first and only Smithsonian Affiliate, the Abbe has spent close to a century sponsoring research, preserving precious collections, and teaching generations of learners about the Wabanaki people. We work closely with tribal communities in Maine, northern New England, and eastern Canada to produce award-winning exhibits, educational programs for students, teachers, and Museum visitors, and collaborative projects. Native people lead programs, serve on our board of trustees, and are staff members.
Our goal is to deepen the visitors’ understanding of the Wabanaki people and history by sharing their stories and culture. We are also committed to examining controversial and contemporary issues, thereby cultivating a greater awareness of our differences and similarities as human beings.
